Oanda's Spread during News

So I've read an enourmous amount of complaints about oanda's 15-18 pip spread during news hours. Now I dont really care about that change in spread because I DONT trade during news hours. However I was wondering, if my position closes during those hours of high spreads, will my spread on the open position change or will it stay at 2 pips like the rest of the time. Please let me know as I have become wary of interbankfx since it takes them an average of 1 minute to open an order and have problems closing positions (market prices shift). Anywho if anyone uses Oanda please let me know what happened? Also would they connect onto MT4 without paying for any API, etc? I'm thinking of going wireless with my phone via WAP since Interbankfx has a PDA/Pocket PC software that can be configured to MT4-accepted brokers.
