What is so special about it ? Why does it need so much memory ? My Maxton uses 6 times less memory .

The special thing about firefox is that it is proclaimed to be more rebust, more effecient, more secure than Internet Explorer; no offense to firebox's developers, but the fact is there are memory leaks (as shown) and critical security issues in every build (see firefox's release notes). However I don't why I am using firefox instead of IE, maybe because of the 'Tab Things'.

Well , Maxthon is IE based, simple and free and suits me just fine like a simple user . I have been using it for a year, maybe a year and a half.

Personally, I love Firefox.

On the memory usage thing, I discovered, strangely enough, that if you minimise Firefox a huge amount of usable memory disappears. Apparently this is the same for all Windows apps - try it, most amusing.

The memory leaks may also be attributable to extensions you have installed also but maybe not. Could I suggest you log into their Forums and ask the question? I'd be surprised there's not already heaps of people with the same issue.

I'd prefer to not use IE based browsers given their weaknesses but browser usage is very much a personal thang - I'll stick to Firefox for the majority of my browsing needs.

Cheers
Martin

Amusing, isn't it? In fact, MEM USAGE column in task manager shows the size of memory set allocated to a process. When an application is minimized, Windows narrows down the size of memory set to only the used memory, and the unused memory are taken back. After firefox is minimized, it unfortuantely starts to allocate memory again at an average rate of 300K/s.

I don't know why my firefox 1.0.5 occasionally crashes, and memory usage is growing, although I have disabled majority of extensions and switched to the default skin. I should post this issue at firefox forum.
