How to test Expert Advisors

I have not seen this question asked anywhere, so I'll ask.

I see alot of references to backtesting and uses of the strategy tester. My question is simple, if one downloads and EA, how do you set up the backtester and strategy tester?

Does anyone have a link to how to set these up? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The vast majority of backtests are useless .EAS that were optimised on past data and based on backtests , will be total failures if future market conditions change.

Ok but is there a tutorial on how to actually do this? I'm talking about which settings, how to run it, what to watch for (like the modeling quality), etc.

I don't mean to seem stupid but I just got into this stuff. I'm interested in learning as much as I can.

Sure, I understand forward testing is the best. And I'll try your suggestion on running a google search.

Also I see alot of backtesting everywhere, does that mean its essentially worthless?

Yes it is worthless to use on real accounts based solely on backtests.

If you are a developer or learner ,it gives a good idea of the strategy/system tested.There is some good information on the strategy tester report and it is important to correctly use the information.Example

A system may show a win rate of 80% , but any system will show high win rates if stops are 100 pips away and take profits are small like 10 pips
